The Unsettling Chinese Obsession With Pale Skin (I’ve Never Seen a Chinese Person)
Boycott everything white until it stops
As I sat down to tackle this article, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease wash over me. The topic at hand is not only bewildering but also deeply concerning. It appears that the Chinese gaming community has become fixated on an unsettling phenomenon: an unnatural obsession with pale skin.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – “But Flavian, what’s so wrong about that?” Well, let me tell you, dear reader, it’s quite simple really. As a games journalist, I’ve had the privilege of engaging with various communities around the world, and I’ve never seen a single Chinese person in my life (I mean, have you ever seen one?). And yet, it’s clear that this fixation on pale skin is a deeply ingrained issue within their culture, and needs to be talked about by people who graduated from real universities and Know Better.
I’m not here to speculate on the reasons behind this phenomenon (cough, racism, cough), but I do know that it’s high time we started addressing this issue in the gaming world. I mean, come on, folks – we can’t just sit idly by while our Chinese “friends” continue to perpetuate this bizarre fixation on whiteness! It’s time we stood up for what’s right and demanded better representation for all skin tones in ALL our games, or at least the popular ones! I mean, who needs realistic depictions of diverse skin tones when we can have… whatever it is that’s going on here? #GenshinImpact #PaleSkinisalwaysbad #GamingForAll
(Note: I didn’t at first realize that Chinese people were actually light-skinned, so I didn’t mention that in the article. I just wanted to express my shock at this supposed “obsession” without actually understanding the cultural context. My cool friends in my secret gaming journalist slack channel assure me this is the correct opinion. Oh, wait – I almost forgot to use the word “weird.”)
It’s WEIRD that all the characters in all those Chinese games are white, don’t you think? It’s also weird that people still are heterosexuals in 2024. I mean, I’m extremely heterosexual, and even I think it’s weird.
(Note: Nailed it!)
